Director of Spin Arts and Captain of Artistic Mutiny, Sarah Shead, invites The Lowry’s Senior Producer, Claire Symonds, Multidisciplinary artist Priya Mistry, and leader of Be More Pirate, Alex Barker, to discuss Radical Strategies for Change via a live Zoom event.
This dynamic panel of female rogues will share their treasure trove of insights and unique perspectives about being radical, how they’re navigating these uncertain times, seizing the opportunity to rebalance power, and in the process attempting to create more equitable relationships and collaborations.
They’ll draw on examples of radical strategies for change from inside and outside the sector, to make a refreshing, entertaining and inspiring discussion about leadership and the future.
The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A with the Zoom participants.
Radical Strategies for Change is part of a series of online events launched by National Dance Network and One Dance UK.

João Maio is a dance artist and creative producer based in Leeds – placing the inherent values of the arts at the core of his working practice. Alongside these, João works continuously to further his understanding of the national artistic ecology and enhancing it, engaging in independent sector development conversations and is the Independent Board Member at Leeds DancePartnership.
Presenter and Panel Speaker – Sarah Shead
Sarah spent the first part of her career working her way up the ranks in arts & cultural organisations. Seeking a more flexible working life, Sarah founded Spin Arts during her maternity leave. Spin Arts is committed to creating productions that showcase under-represented voices.
Sarah has become increasingly concerned by the ‘us vs them’ narrative that dominates politics and society, recognising parallels in the arts and cultural sector, Sarah instigated Artistic Mutiny UK, a network of arts & cultural workers seeking to find more equitable ways of working together.

Alex Barker
Alex originally studied Literature followed by an MA in International Relations where she focused on conflict in the Middle East.
After backpacking around the region, Alex took a job in international development, moved briefly into social care before spending seven years at the RSA (Royal Society of Arts) as Communications Manager.
Then, Alex reached a turning point and joined Sam Conniff to give life to Be More Pirate as something beyond the book, a global network supporting social entrepreneurs.
Claire Symonds
Claire leads The Lowry’s nationally recognised artist development programme. She has developed this area of work to become a core part of The Lowry’s offer, establishing a strategy and structure that gives some of the most exciting early career theatre makers in the country the opportunity to benefit from bespoke packages of financial, practical, creative and professional development support.
Prior to working at The Lowry, Claire has been Officer (Theatre) at Arts Council England, a freelance producer and programmer for Re:Play Festival – Library Theatre Company and a Talent Scout for BBC Writersroom North.

Is a Multidisciplinary Artist, Socially Engaged Worker & Creative Producer. Straddling performance, visual and live art. Her work evokes discourse and action around topics of mental health, neurodiversity, feminist politics, identity, sex and queerness.
Mistry’s work is grounded in sustainable and respectable practices that hold to account, evoke change collaboration, authorship and agency. Provocateur, Traveller & Collaborator, Mistry is conspiring alternative economies in our ways of living, organising & working.
Recently she attempted to travel from the UK to a residency in Australia without taking a flight, to practically figure out how we might live and work in an arts economy that is truly environmentally sustainably and not tokenistic.
