The Day I Was The Norwegian National Flag

Mistry went out in a dress made from the Norwegian National Flag.
What is she doing? Is this some kind of tourist trap?
Why is everyone having their photograph taken with this wondering flag?

Norway A series of portraits, a presentation and a discussion

A commentary on the social, political standpoint and traditions of Norwegians, in relative comparison to my own British Indian culture. Instigated by a series of portraits taken on Norway’s National day. In which I posed with members of the public, in a Norsk Flag rehashed into a dress. Apparently this is seen as an act of defacement to the flag- illegal and highly disrespectful. Centered on the value of the respective National Flag/s, this act fuelled a discussion of vast difference and controversial opinions in Norway’s second biggest city.

I can’t say exactly what I was doing donning the Norwegian National Flag as a dress, in Bergen, on the Norwegian National Day.

I would not call myself a Nationalist.

And I dout that I would ever wear the Union Jack or St George’s Cross in the street.

The thought only serves to remind me of a stark, bit disturbing image of Jerry Halliwel, of her ginger Spice Girl fame Not an image I want to replicate or emulate.

But I come dangerously close. In the red, white, blue, cross bearing Norge Flag

The only time I might’ve seen myself wearing one is representing the nation in sport. I always wondered, if I had pursued all my sporting endevours- would I have made a sport star? The first in the England Women’s football team, first British Asian woman in football, or indeed in sport.

But lets face it, how many British Asians do you see representing the Nation in sport?
